Research Data Service

The Research Data Service is provided by experts across Information Services. They aim to provide the tailored support researchers need throughout the research lifecycle, whether you are creating new datasets or reusing existing data.

Research Data Management (RDM) is the methodical handling of the information produced or re-used during the course of academic research.

It is a policy requirement of many funders and a legal responsibility. The outcomes of good RDM are that the rights of data subjects/owners are protected and that data is archived towards the end of research so that it remains available for validation of results, and potentially for future re-use.

Digital Research Services

The Digital Research Services Team can help you navigate the landscape of digital tools and services and provide you with tailored advice and guidance.  There is a vast array of digital tools and services to support you in every stage of the research lifecycle, from data collection and storage to data analysis and visualisation to publication and preservation.  Examples include

• Eddie – A high performance Linux computing cluster that can analyse large amounts of data far more quickly than a desktop computer
• Eleanor – Create virtual servers (instances) configured to your exact requirements. Choose from a number of pre-configured operating systems or build your own.
• DataStore – Safely save data while you work on it; spaces for individual researchers and research collaborations.
• DataSync - A file sharing service that allows you to work on shared data with your research collaborators anywhere in the world.
• Subversion – Keep consecutive versions of data and a history of changes and collaboration for large centralised projects in a personal or group repository.

Edinburgh Clinical Research Facility provides state of the art facilities to support multidisciplinary clinical research locally, nationally and internationally.  A joint venture between University of Edinburgh and NHS Lothian, Edinburgh CRF was one of only five facilities in the UK to receive Wellcome Trust Millennium funding.  Our Scientific Cores and Specialist support teams have many years’ experience in supporting high quality, high impact research.

National Avian Research Facility

The NARF provides resources for avian biology research, particularly embryos and birds from chicken lines and Japanese quail. It comprises two units: one standard poultry facility and a second that has specified pathogen free (SPF) status. Resources include expertise in genome engineering in the chicken, and a range of poultry lines. The lines maintained include layer and broiler chickens and GMO chicken lines including ubiquitous and inducible fluorescent reporter lines, particularly useful in developmental biology and immunology research. The SPF unit houses inbred and closed outbred chicken lines for immunology research and has capability for gene-editing under SPF conditions.
