Where to Start?
If you are interested in contributing to teaching, the best place to start is by speaking to the Director of Education, a Programme Lead or Teaching administration team within your School or Institute. You should also look at the Undergraduate or Post-Graduate taught courses offered by your School/Institute on their webpage, to understand if there is a course you might particularly like to contribute to. You will need to negotiate with your line manager to find time to undertake teaching work.
How can I contribute to Teaching?
There are several ways you can contribute to teaching activity in the University. You might offer to give a one off special lecture on a topic you are expert in, or you could act as a demonstrator or tutor in a lab or discussion session.
Developing as a New Teacher

Full-time Research Staff
If you are employed on a full-time research contract you will need to check with your local HR team that your funder allows you to contribute to teaching, most funders do but to different levels. If your funder allows you to contribute to teaching and you are on a full-time contract you will need to undertake teaching within your existing work hours. The University can't pay you for more than 100% of your full-time contract. You will need to discuss your teaching contribution with your line manager and ensure your workload is adjusted to allow you to undertake teaching.
Part-time Research Staff
If you are employed on a part-time research contract but don't want to increase your hours working for the University you will need to discuss your teaching contribution with your line manager and ensure your workload is adjusted to allow you to undertake teaching. If you are part-time and would be interested in increasing your hours to undertake teaching your School/Institute must pay you for these additional hours.
Collective Agreement - Employment of Guaranteed Minimum Hours Staff
